You know those people that want to take their dog everywhere? Well, that’s me. I am one of those people. If I am going somewhere, I always want to bring my Danny Boy along. I spend a good amount of time Googling “dog-friendly [insert activity]”. That’s how I found Doe Orchards, an apple orchard that allows dogs to walk the orchard with you. I mention this because many places allow dogs to be on their property, but after a little investigating, they are not permitted where the trees are, just the common areas. And that's not really what I was looking for.
I love apple picking and bringing Danny makes it so much more fun! So I was beyond excited to check this place out! We loaded up in the car this morning and headed off to Harvard, MA. We pulled up to a beautiful orchard with a small farm stand. There were only a few cars and we were able to easily park and walk up to get our bag. A peck is $22.00 and ½ a bushel is $40.00. A little tip on the bags, they go by bag, not by weight, so load them up! We met a few other dogs while we were there, but it is a large area and everyone is on leash and kept a respectful distance.
Danny had a blast! So many new things for him to explore—all the smells! He got to try some of the apples (no seeds!) and he is a fan! During our apple adventure, we found an area that had a fake wolf protecting the orchard. Danny approached this strange, non-moving canine with caution. After a few sniffs, he quickly realized he was not anyone to worry about or play with and went back to his exploring.
We walked all the way to the back of the orchard where we found the Christmas Tree farm. They have lots of large trees that will be ready for this season and baby trees that won’t be ready for quite some time. We walked around checking the area out, then sat in the shade for a bit.
I spent Labor Day this year picking apples, hanging with my dog, and enjoying a beautiful day at the orchard. The staff is lovely and informative, the apples are delicious, and the grounds are well-maintained. I highly recommend taking a ride out to Harvard and visiting this great place!
